This week, the Gypsy Art Club has made way for an incredible gig….

Tue 3rd April - LONDON KLEZMER QUARTET

The London Klezmer Quartet brims with musicality and elicits every emotion possible in my soul… I want to laugh, I want to cry, but mostly importantly I want to dance!Amy Ray of the Indigo Girls.

The London Klezmer Quartet (www.londonklezmerquartet.com) evoke a fervour and joy reminiscent of the Jewish minstrels who kept people dancing, laughing and crying in the 'shtetls' of Eastern Europe for hundreds of years. Their deep understanding of this celebratory and soulful music is reflected in exuberant, passionate, and accomplished performances of traditional and original klezmer music. This band is the much anticipated collaboration of “four of Europe's most talented klezmer musicians” (Frank London, Klezmatics), showcasing a unique combination of artistry and exuberance.

This all-female band formed in 2009 and have been picked up by the UK’s foremost folk & world music promoters (Songlines Magazine, Continental Drifts, The Magpie’s Nest) playing venues great and small and swiftly becoming festival favourites. Band members are also in demand on other world music stages, recording & touring with The Indigo Girls (US), Sinead O’Connor (Ireland), Natacha Atlas (Egypt), She’Koyokh (UK), Abdel Ali Slimani (Algeria), and Ahmed Mukhtar (Iraq), playing festivals around the world.

Described as “fabulous, professional and a joy to watch and listen to” (UK Jewish Music Institute), their music as “exquisite” (radio Sefarad), their debut album has won acclaim from klezmer musicians around the world. Stewart Curtis (K-Groove, UK) hailed it as “truly great authentic klezmer” and Stuart Brotman (Brave Old World & Veretski Pass, US) authenticated their “very intimate sound”, whilst fRoots Magazine say “it is a tremendous calling card for their increasingly acclaimed live performances.’

THE LONDON KLEZMER QUARTET features 4 incredible musicians: Ilana Ctavitz (fiddle), Susi Evans (clarinet), Carol Isaacs (accordion), Indra Buraczewska (double bass)

Come and hear this “gorgeous traditional playing full of “groove” with so many creative and joyful twists!” (Deborah Srauss), and hot-foot it Yiddish style to those upbeat bulgars, sorrowful doinas and frenetic freylekhs!

Thu 5th April - ZULYA & THE CHILDREN OF

THE UNDERGROUND

Note from Yaron: “I am soooo excited about ZULYA playing Camelot!! I have been trying to get Zulya to Camelot or Qirkz for years!! Come and find out why!!

Internationally acclaimed, ARIA-winning Zulya and The Children of the Underground will play Camelot Lounge for the very 1st time! They perform an unusual suite of original repertoire that, though tricky to describe, weaves a delightful and intriguing insight into Zulya's influences and experiences. It includes songs inspired by Zulya's Russian and Tatar heritage but goes further to touch material which embraces jazz, circus, Mexican music, folk, European cabaret of the 1920's and even Soviet pop. One thing can be said for sure - it's musically invigorating and beautiful.

The all-star line-up of accomplished musicians includes Anthony Schulz (accordion), Eamon McNelis (trumpet), Lucas Michailidis (guitar), Andrew Tanner (double bass), and Justin Marshall (drums). Together they strike as a dedicated collective, and of course there is the unmistakeable voice of Zulya, once described as "ever-evolving lustrous thing of wonder - a throne from which to rule".

Multi award-winning Zulya and The Children of the Underground is by far one of the most intriguing and unique acts in Australia, and indeed the world. They perform exquisite original music loosely inspired by Zulya's Tatar and Russian roots. Zulya's music defies being labeled, but has been described as "[sitting] somewhere between Kurt Weillish Euro-Cabaret jazz and lullabies constructed to tear your heart out." Zulya has independently produced six albums to date, including the

ARIA winning 3 Nights (2007) and magical The Waltz of Emptiness (2004) - both of which upon their release in Europe spent 16 weeks in the top 10 of the European world music charts - a feat no other Australian album has ever achieved. 5 stars

"What strikes you immediately is not just the confident purity of Zulya's voice, but the quality of writing and arranging... Swinging like a Bolshevik Marlene Dietrich, Zulya and the Children of the Underground are able to strike a deft balance between melancholic sadness and the unbridled joy that is never too far away..", Songlines, UK, for 3 Nights.

Backed by a hand picked 7 piece band of Sydney's finest musicians, Dereb covers many of the vintage soul masterpieces made famous by artists from the 1960s and 70s such as Mahmoud Ahmed and Mulatu Astatqe, and given wide exposure through the 'Ethiopiques' compilation series and the soundtrack to Jim Jarmusch's film 'Broken Flowers'

Born in Ethiopia, Dereb grew up surrounded by a family of musicians, and from an early age was completely immersed in his home country's richly unique melange of sounds, rhythms and musical styles. His destiny was sealed when as a 4 year old he first performed publicly with his family. His vocal talent was evident and, with his parent mentors by his side he went from strength to strength, finally adding a Masenko, an Ethiopian violin, to his repertoire at the age of 10. By the time he was 16 he was drawing crowds in the bars of Addis Ababa and around Ethiopia, as both a solo artist and with other Ethiopian musicians.

Over the next few years Dereb performed in America, England, New Zealand and Australia. His first solo CD, 'Korkoro Yalew' recorded in Ethiopia in 2003, included the song "Wollo", which hit the top of the charts in Addis Ababa that year. While living in Melbourne he began experimenting with other musicians, eventually finding creative satisfaction with Nicky Bomba and the Bomba Band, performing with them at Womad in 2006. The combo released a CD in December 2006 and toured nationally in June 2007.

After moving to Sydney, Dereb embarked on his latest project, assuming the moniker "Dereb the Ambassador", after a title given to him years earlier by the media in Ethiopia. Enlisting the assistance of producer Tony Buchen, the pair pieced together a band of some of Sydney's finest musicians and record the newly formed groups first LP, launched in early 2011. The recording was made using only pre 1970s equipment and the resulting recording is a warm, slightly distorted sound recreating the feel of the dusty Ethiopian soul records that have started to once again become popular worldwide.

Backed by his newly formed band, consisting of some of Australia's most talented musicians, Dereb the Ambassador is poised to take the world stage. The lineup is a veritable who's who of Sydney's world/jazz scene:

Dereb Deselegn - Vocals
Peter Farrar - C Melody Saxophone
Matt Ottignon - Tenor Saxophone / Flute
Daniel Pliner - Keyboard
Jonathan Pease - Guitar
Rory Brown - Bass
Carlos Adura - Drums
Aykho Akhrif – Congas

Microwave Jenny describe their music as Pop/Folk/Love. With a name that stems from classic Aussie film "The Castle", Microwave Jenny’s genre-defying style is determined to bring pop music played by real musicians with real instruments back to the Australian musical landscape. Brendon and Tessa first crossed paths while rehearsing backstage at a show in 2005. The realisation they shared the same kind of musical direction and an undeniable chemistry was the catalyst for the first Microwave Jenny show. Tessa has a unique voice and her alternative twist on the jazz and pop genres will carve a new spot in listeners’ hearts, making the Central Coast 22-year-old a force in the Australian music industry. Combined with Brendon’s heart-felt, blues influenced guitar and vocals the dynamic pairing promises something truly special. Already a festival favourite performing at Bluesfest, The Woodford Folk Festival, The Dreaming Festival, The Darwin Festival, Nannup Music Festival and The Australasian World Music Expo (AWME). Drawing influence from artists such as James Taylor, Bill Withers, Van Morrison, Janis Ian and Joni Mitchell, they aim to promote good vibes, positive spirited music with honest, and sincere lyrics.

Damian Wright is a brilliant flamenco guitarist...Wright showed what a captivating solo
player he is on his own, and elsewhere his articulation of complex lines was fluid
and dripping with conviction
- John Shand, Sydney Morning Herald. 22/02/11

I loved the authenticity of this performance, This is blissful music: tabla-fast strums that
drench you in tense rhythms; barred left hands with fingered melodies; rock solid beats in
rhythms of huge complexity. Just fabulous music and a great eye-opener,

Wright imbues every piece with the rich, rhythmic structure so characteristic of
flamenco. .....A piece like Khyal, by Wright, has haunting harmonics and an evocative
Moorish flavour. It's an imaginative journey: like travelling, without moving your feet. - Lloyd
