Fri 3rd February - MUCHO MAMBO
The explosive 14 piece MUCHO MAMBO Latin Big Band returns to Camelot after their stunning sold out show here a coupla months ago...2 big sets of funky Mambo, Cha Cha Cha, Salsa, Son and Pachanga.
Featuring
The Mucho Mambo experience is one of a kind in the music world, a truly authentic and timeless Latin Big Band. The orchestra's dynamic and distinctive sound, world class big band arrangements and original look is reminiscent of the golden era of Latin and Jazz genres.
Mucho Mambo's unique sound blends bold, brassy riffs and driving percussion with big brass arrangements and cool old style Latin grooves. Mucho Mambo's big sound builds on the classic orchestrations and rhythms of the 1950's and 1960's, Mambo, Cha Cha Cha and Salsa, reinventing them with a funky new edge.
The initial inspiration of the Mucho Mambo line up and material were the wonderful orchestras of the 1950's and '60's in Cuba, Benny More, Julio Cueva, Miguelito Valdes, Tito Gomez, Machito, Mario Bauza and Perez Prado, and the Mambo movement in New York with Tito Rodriguez and Tito Puente. The fusion of Latin rhythms and Jazz harmonies and orchestration was commonplace throughout this era and sadly seems less common today.

Mucho Mambo features:
Fabian Hevia - Percussion/Vocals, Jess Ciampa - Percussion/Vocals, Vincenza Lasaracina - Percussion, 'El Martillo' - Musical Director/Vocals, Cesar Marin - Double Bass/Vocals, Nick Southcott - Piano, Matt Ottignon - Saxophone, Steve Fitzmaurice - Saxophone, Karl Laskowski - Saxophone, Jeremy Borthwick - Trombone, Mike Raper - Trombone, Tom McElvogue - Trumpet, Angus Gomm - Trumpet, Antony Gullick - Trumpet, Wilson Orozco - Vocals
"A 15 piece congregation skimmed from the cream of the Australian Latin and jazz scene, with three saxes (one doubling on flute), two trombones, three trumpets, three percussionists (!), bass, piano and four dancing coristas as well as 'El Martillo' upfront who conducted, sang and exhorted the dancers. Mucho Mambo really set up a roar of love. They hit the ground running with energetic, tightly paced pieces from the book of Machito, Mario Bauza et al. It wasn't long before the dance floor was packed with swaying bodies as the band ran through classic mambos and cha-cha-chas that twisted and surprised! The groove could have gone on for hours!" Sat 4th February - THE LIGHTHOUSE KEEPERS
Recently reunited as part of Sydney's On the Street live series, THE LIGHTHOUSE KEEPERS promptly sold out their show the quickest of all in the series and left a smile on the dial of all that attended. This was an amazing result for an eighties indie act.
Juliet Ward still chewed gum while she sang, Blue Dalton still looked half surprised and half asleep as he hooked up another harmonica run and several songs still ended in another fine mess - but upstairs at the Sando this night we were all bouncing along, singing along, giggling along exactly as we had back then. - Bernard Zuel - Sydney Morning Herald
Following that modest success, The Lighthouse Keepers have decided to crank up the engines one final time with four shows in

Thu 9th February – LADIES AT THE LOUNGE:
+ JENNA MURPHY
“I love love LOVE Ann Vriend – don’t miss this one...!” Yaron Hallis, singer and venue operator
Canadian
First, the voice: “Soulful, inspiring, brave and bluesy” (Rip It Up, Adelaide) with a “vocal range from vulnerable delicacy to blasts of soulful power” (Halifax Chronicle) Vriend's vocal sound has been described as an enchanting cross between Dolly Parton and a young Aretha Franklin and as “almost confronting” by The Sydney Morning Herald.
Besides this, Vriend's songs possess a natural knack for melody, garnering her hits on both independent and commercial radio stations -- including Gold rotation for her tune “Feelin' Fine” -- and have charted on college stations as far away as
As a balance between her intensely performed songs, “Vriend is fantastic in concert – a very, very, funny woman that tends to belt out her songs in between her most entertaining comedic intervals” (4 of 5 Stars, A n E Vibe Magazine). Vriend's latest release, entitled “Love & Other Messes,” “has critics drooling over her stylistic and lyrical qualities. Impossible to categorize, Vriend’s unique style brings together elements of soul, pop, country, jazz, blues and gospel and so, as many critics agree, it sounds both familiar and strange at the same time” (The Weekend Telegram), described as “a retro look at old pop records of the ‘60s, with Vriend playing the country diva, the Amy Winehouse of the prairies. Sometimes she’s channeling Dolly Parton or Blossom Dearie doing early Loretta Lynn and Aretha Franklin” (
With a stack of rave reviews now under her belt, and an increasing confidence as a writer and performer, Vriend is making fans in each town she plays. “Wherever Vriend takes her music next it will be in the right direction,” states The Daily Telegram. And Drum Media gently urges: “If she makes another visit soon, you'd do well to go along.” Stated more forcefully by Toronto Star: “Don't miss her.”
JENNA MURPHY’s soulful combination of indie-folk melodies and pop hooks, combined with emotive lyrics and instrumental prowess are set to forge a new sound in the acoustic scene. Originally from

GYPSY MADNESS WITH A TASTE OF
Friday Feb 10th will be a night of Balkan Gypsy brass-band madness - and that ain't all! There will also be Persian dance grooves, aetherial Sufi meditations and strange uncategorisable originals. Special guest with the band will be Iranian Kurdish percussionist MUSTAFA KARAMI, a master of the dhaf (traditional frame drum). He was declared Best Dhaf-player in
"We've had some Persian and Kurdish tunes in the repertoire for a while - including Persian reggae" says Kim "but this gig will give us a chance to learn a few new grooves. Mustafa and I played together in Davood Tabrizi's Far Seas last year, and hopefully that will be an ongoing project too. Llew Kiek has also played some Iranian music over the years, and Peter Kennard is a great frame-drum player, so there should be a lot of things happening".
There will also be music with a Balkan Gypsy brass band feel, driven along by Sam Golding's sousaphone.
Kim Sanders: ney, kaval, gaida, saxofon
Llew Kiek: bouzouki, baglama, oud
Sam Golding: sousaphone
Peter Kennard: percussion
